Andhra stops iron ore mining, jolt to Karnataka minister Hyderabad, Nov 24 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh late Tuesday ordered a complete halt to iron ore mining across the state, delivering a huge blow to Karnataka Minister G. Janardhan Reddy's Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC).

Hyderabad, Nov 24 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh late Tuesday ordered a complete halt to iron ore mining across the state, delivering a huge blow to Karnataka Minister G. Janardhan Reddy's Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC).
The government also issued orders that the iron ore stocks with all companies should not be transported to other states or the ports.
OMC and five other companies engaged in iron ore mining in Anantapur district bordering Karnataka would be affected by the orders, which came hours after Chief Minister K. Rosaiah held a high-level meeting with officials to discuss the issue of alleged illegal mining by OMC.
The decision came after a central empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court established illegal mining by OMC and recommended that all mining activity be suspended until fresh boundaries of the mining leases are carried out.
Rosaiah discussed the report of the central empowered committee and also that of a three-member committee appointed by the state government to look into alleged irregularities. The decision was taken after the government consulted the legal experts.
OMC is allegedly carrying out illegal mining in the lease areas of other mining companies, forest land and also indulging in illegal transport of iron ore between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is already running a campaign on the issue. It alleged that the illegal mining by OMC had caused a loss of Rs.10,000 crore to the state.
The TDP also alleged that OMC pumped in ill-gotten money into business concerns of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, Kadapa MP and son of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
Janardhana Reddy, who is minister for tourism in Karnataka, has huge mining interests in both the states.
The powerful Reddy had recently led a revolt against Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yedyurappa.

Hyderabad,Nov 21:- The opposition Telugu Desam Party(TDP) President N Chandrababu Naidu today threatened that the Opposition would resort to 'direct action' if the Andhra Pradesh Government did not immediately cancel the mining lease of Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and confiscate iron ore mined there, in the wake of the findings of the Central Empowered Committee (CEC).''Chief Minister K Rosaiah should act immediately and fulfill his responsibilities. If he fails, we will intensify our stir along with other opposition parties till our demands are met,'' he told a press conference here. Stating that the previous Congress government, while promulgating the Government Orders 151 and 152, did not specify the condition of captive mining though it eliminated others on the ground, he wanted the Rosaiah government to ensure that the iron ore mined was used only for making steel.It was improper on the part of Bellary mining tycoon and Karnataka Tourism Minister G Janardhan Reddy to claim that only the Supreme Court was the appropriate authority to decide the matter, Mr Naidu added. It may be noted that the CEC, appointed by the apex Court on environment and forest, in its preliminary report submitted to the apex court, has confirmed prima facie that there was illegal mining beyond the limits of leased lands, in violation of the Forest Conservation Act by Janardhana Reddy's companies. The CEC had been constituted only on the orders of the apex court and it was the right fora to decide the matter, Mr Naidu said. The TDP had already decided to undertake a campaign in New Delhi against the alleged illegal activities of the OMC by seeking support of all parties, including the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP.Stating that ''the TDP along with like-minded parties will exert pressure on the Centre to take prompt action against OMC'', he wanted the Centre to announce a new mining policy with a view to promote ''value addition instead of exporting merely iron ore,'' taking a cue from China which was not using its indigenous iron and instead importing it to preserve it for future. So was the case with the USA, which was preserving crude oil, he pointed out.

Even China scored 3.6 on the scale, thereby indicating slightly better position than India in terms of perception of corrupt countries. In India's other neighbouring countries, Nepal was at 143rd position much below India, Pakistan scored 2.4 claiming 139th position along with Bangladesh while Sri Lanka scored 3.1 and stood at 97th position. "Transparency international has found that strong correlation between corruption and poverty continued to exist, jeopardising the global fight against poverty and threatening to derail the United Nations Millennium Development Goals," Admiral (Retd.) R H Tahiliani, Chairman of Transparency International India said in a statement.
